Tim's latest visit - Summer 2009
For the first time ever, I spent 44 days in The Gambia in the summer. Each day I visited Youna to train the players and set up a league of premership/ championship with cash prizes. We now have nearly 50 players at Youna School ranging from 9 to 21 years of age.
The league allows each player to play full court singles to 21 playing each player in their group 2 times. The top three in each group receive a prize. The league I scheduled to finish at Christmas time.
The weather (rainy season) made the training hard as transport became nearly an impossibility due to heavy water on the roads. Before we trained each day the hall was cleaned to remove all the sand that keeps appearing!
I am delighted we have so many players and with the leagues continuing this allows me to look elsewhere in The Gambia to start Badminton within three schools. I am happy to be working with Tamba on this to try and set up leagues within new schools that are fortunate to have a multi-purpose hall.
I would again like to thank Che, our team captain, for his efforts in keeping things correct and running the leagues in my absence. This sport is starting to develop and grip Youna. Long may it continue!

NEW CAPTAIN AND VICE-CAPTAIN
Cherno Bah and Ceaser Mendy are successfully running the training for me during my absence. They are highly motivated and very keen to do well. They will be running 26 sessions before my return, keeping a record of work done and a record of attendance. They also have to keep the hall clean before and after the training managing the allocation of shuttles and rackets working with the school assistant head. These roles are very important for the development and the success of the sport in Youna.

Eleven days of intense heat and training everyday. My Team Captain Che and his Vice Captain Ceaser are doing a good job in organising the training. We have a training session once a week for new players from Youna School. Read more from Time...

April 2009
It's so hard to believe that a year has passed since I last visited The Gambia. And upon my return last year, it was only a matter of days before I realized that I had to go back. A year seemed such a long time to wait, and at first the time dragged. Read more from Sue...
